Hearing Issues Archives

If you ever wondered how to get ear wax out of your ear, you are not alone. Millions of people suffer from having too much wax build in their ears without knowing how to properly and safely remove it. I know I have had some serious build-up before and I have a buddy that’s gone to the doctor several times to have it removed. Cotton swabs may seem the obvious solution, but actually pushes wax deeper into the ear canal and makes it harder to remove completely. There are many natural solutions to get rid of earwax in an easy and more importantly, safe manner.

Ear Candles

Many people have heard of ear candles, but do not know how to get earwax out with them.  The ear candling process does require assistance and should not be attempted alone. (Unless you have some type of hot-wax-burning-your-face fetish.) Ear candles, or ear cones, are specialty candles available in most health food stores.

Start by lying on your side, with a pillow under your head, then have the person assisting you place a towel or dishcloth around your ear and over your hair. Have the assistant put a hole in a paper plate and then place the plate over your ear, so the hole in the plate aligns with the entry hole to your ear. Place the tapered end of the ear candle, or cone into the hole of the plate by the ear canal, and then light the candle. This creates a vacuum which will help remove wax buildup in ear canals. The candle can be burned until it is about four inches away from the ear, at which time it should be extinguished by placing in a bowl of water. Use a new candle and repeat with the opposite ear.

Ear Irrigation

Another way to help in cleaning wax from ears is by irrigating them with a solution of one part vinegar, one part hot water and a few drops of hydrogen peroxide. The water should be hot to the touch, but not hot enough to cause discomfort. Using some sort of dropper, drip a couple of drops of the solution directly into the ear canal. Allow the solution to stay in the ear for a few minutes. You may feel it foam, or hear it crackle, that is from the hydrogen peroxide doing its work. Once the solution has settled in the ear, drain out and repeat the process on the opposite ear. This can be done two or three times a day until all the wax buildup in ear has been removed.

Ear Wax Dissolution with Paraffin or Mineral Oil

Another home remedy to get rid of earwax is by using any sort of mineral or paraffin oil. Start by gently heating up the oil in a spoon over a candle until it is just slightly above body temperature. Place the warmed oil in a dropper and then lie on your side. You may want to cover your hair, or pillow with a towel in case of any overflow. Drip the oil into the ear canal and let set for five minutes to dissolve the wax. Then rinse it out with warm water irrigation and then repeat on the opposite ear.

Knowing how to get ear wax out of your ear does not have to be a difficult challenge with the above remedies. These can all be done on a regular basis to keep the ear clean and wax free. The ear can be conditioned with a few drops of baby oil, mineral oil or carrier oil to prevent it from drying out after any of the treatments.

If you have an earache, and you need to get earache relief but you do not want to visit the doctor’s office, then there are several home remedies for an earache that you can try. This is beneficial if you would rather not make the trip to the doctor’s office, and save time and money as well. Use caution while doing these home remedies since you may have an adverse reaction to any of the products used to try get earache relief. A lot of the remedies involve food items, or items you can find around the house easily. This allows you to take care of the ear pain, and relax knowing you didn’t need a doctor in order to get earache treatment.

When you get out of the shower, you can blow dry the ear instead of using the towel to rub them dry. Using the warm setting lightly blow over them, this will help soothe instead of irritate.

Purchase a ripe bulb of garlic, puncture a piece of it, and squeeze the garlic juice into each ear. Since garlic is a natural antibiotic, it can help reduce the pain and clear out any bacteria that may be living up in there.

If you’re going to go into water, you can roll some mineral oil in your ear. Pop in some earplugs, and avoid any water that may be dirty. This will allow you to focus on the swimming, instead of pain. Use warm olive oil, and place it in a dropper. Place 2-3 drops in the ear or both that are bothering you once it has cooled to relieve pain.

Wrap a towel or small blanket over a hot water bottle, and lay on it. This also works with a dual purpose first aid pack. Warming up a plate in the microwave may also work as well if the above two options are not available. Make sure the plate is microwave safe. Warmed mineral oil can soothe a sore ear, and using a dropper can be dropped into your ear. Pulling down gently on your ear allows the oil to relax comfortably in the ear. Make sure to keep it in your ear.

If cold air is the problem for hurting ears, then wearing a warm scarf around them will help. Place cotton over your ears is another remedy when outside. Just don’t press the cotton down too far.

Chewing gum or sucking on a piece of candy helps when there are pressure changes that bother them. This will allow the inside ear to pop, relieving some of the pain that comes along with the pressure changes. If this does not seem to soothe the pain, you can always hold your nose and blow through one of your nostrils at a time until you feel the pain go away. This might also make your ears pop, or yawning may also make your ears pop.

All of these remedies might work for some, and might not for others. You have to find out which works for you. If you think you have an ear infection then you might want to consult your doctor, or try a different ear infection remedy.

Hearing aids are a part of life for many people, especially when they get older. However, not all hearing aids are the same. The kind of hearing aid you might need all depends on your lifestyle and the degree of hearing loss that you’re experiencing.

There are some digital hearing aids that can fit completely inside the ear canal so that they are barely visible from the outside. These are nice because most people will be unaware that the hearing impaired person is wearing a device.

However, these devices are really only suitable for people with minimal hearing loss. They are also limited in the features that will fit on the hearing aid, such as volume control. For some people, this just might not be a good solution.

Another style of hearing aid fits partially into the ear canal. These models combine the benefits of a volume control unit while still being largely unnoticeable. Some of these hearing aids even come with remote control devices to help with the volume issue. Because these devices have more options, they can be used by people who have mild to moderately severe hearing loss.

Most hearing aids are fitted either into the ear or just behind it. In the ear devices fill the space in the cup of the ear. Behind the ear styles have two components, one of which fits inside the ear. The battery component and volume control go behind the ear.

The downside of these models is that they are more visible. On the bright side, they feature longer batter life. They also have more control features available for you to use to monitor your hearing.

Hearing aids are comprised of three components: the microphone, amplifier and speaker. The microphone is the part of the device that picks up the sounds that are emitted around you. The amplifier helps to increase the volume of the sound so that you are able to hear it. The speaker component relays the enhanced sound to the ear so you can hear it easily.

Another basic part is the hearing aid battery. They will need to be replaced from time to time, even in a properly working device. They’re generally quite inexpensive. Depending on the particular kind you need, they generally cost between four and seven dollars.

Hopefully, this information will help you make the right decision on getting the best hearing aid for your particular circumstances.

That annoying sound – the relentless ringing in your ears. What is it and is there any way to make it stop? Is there a treatment for it that works?

These are all questions that have been asked by people with tinnitus – a perception of sound heard in the ear when there is no external source for the sound. It’s often described as a high pitched ringing, but has also been described as a chirping, roaring or whooshing.

This ringing can be caused by many different things. The most common of which is hearing loss resulting from an exposure to a very loud noise such as an explosion or continued exposure to above average noise levels such as those experienced at a construction site.

Other causes include low levels of iron, neurological disorders, mercury or lead poisoning, drug side effects and others.

Due to the wide variety of causes of a ringing sound heard in the ear, it is a problem experienced by a large number of people. People such as William Shatner, David Letterman and Bono have all lived with this problem for many years.
