What Does Eczema Look Like?
Eczema is term for a group of medical conditions that cause the skin to become inflamed or irritated. That’s a pretty broad definition. Since it is so broad, it is hard to describe what to look for. You may have some kind of rash and be thinking, is this eczema? What does eczema look like? Eczema can come in many different shapes and forms and can look many different ways. The easiest way to know what eczema looks like is to actually look at pictures of various common forms.
Eczema can look like a rash:

One Common Form Of Eczema On The Arms (What Does Eczema Look Like)
This particular picture is of one of the most common types of eczema characterized by patchy red skin. This type of eczema will often come and go based on various factors.
Common causes for flare-ups include
- Contact with coarse materials
- Becomming too hot or too cold
- Certain soaps or detergents
- Animal dander
Eczema can also have the appearance of small bumps on the skin
This type of eczema tends to be more permanent and can be harder to treat.
It can range from:
- Mild – Barely perceptible elevated bumps
- Moderate – Clearly visible raising of the skin but not excessive
- Severe – Marked and extensive bumps on the skin
The most severe types of eczema can cause red open sores.
This type of eczema can also range from mile to severe:
- Mild – Evidence of small sores on the surface of the skin
- Moderate – May look similar to a mild case. However, sores show evidence of deeper skin injury
- Severe – Many erosive or crusty lesions. Most of which are deep into the skin.
As you can tell, knowing what eczema looks like can be difficult as it comes in many different forms and at many levels of severity. Always remember, when in doubt it is always best to consult your doctor.

The third picture that you show to be eczema, the one labeled “Severe Eczema With Open Sores”, is very questionable in my opinion. This person more than likely has a fungal infection of some sort.

I have severe eczema and it doesn’t look like any of those! it looks more like scabs than sores!
Hey Jackie – eczema can come in all types of forms. We just tried to hit the most common types in this post.
Eczema can be managed by using corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and an antihistamine to reduce itching. it is also wise to avoid dairy products and nuts if you have food allergy.
no thats definately excema. i have excema and have since i was a kid, and thats ecxactly what mine looks like now on my fingers. there are many different looking types.
Eczema loves dry skin, so the objective is to try and keep the skin as moist as possible. You need to be careful with this. Try to use natural products as much as possible, and be wary of some medications which often contain harsh chemicals, and can sometimes add to the problem.
Creams which contain vitamin E can be effective, and also people have found that if they moisturize their skin with coconut oil after taking a bath, it can help in reducing the soreness of the symptoms.
Molly
i have Eczema and i use topical corticosteroids to relieve itching. a good natural product to relieve itching from eczema is Oatmeal and Seawater.
i suffer from Eczema and what i do is just take as much vitamins A, C and E supplements plus some topical corticosteroid to remedy the itch.
i have it bad but its starting 2 clear my docto put me on steriods but i wish i can be normal without worry about being laughed at because my skin is different ..
yea i have eczema. It looks like picture 3 sometimes and it’s disgusting and on my hands. everybody always asked about it and it’s really embarrassing. i’ve had it since i was about 11 and i went to the doctor for it and they pretty much did nothing and said it’ll clear up. but 6 years later i still have it
i have had eczema for over ten years, back in middle school it would be behind my knees and elbows, caused by stress. im now 23 and a cosemtologist and come into alot of harsh chemicals. i no longer suffer from it in the areas from middle school , but yet my fingers. i experience small blisters , some are raised and others are not, then once the erupt my skin dries out and i experience deep lesions. i have tried to use euceren lotion , a&d ointment, but realize that the first ingedent is an oil… i feel that maybe this isnt the solution cause iol would be a barrier to keep moisture from getting in.. nothing seems to help even sleepin with gloves after lotioning up.. they end up stinging . and more irritated.. are these two different tyes of eczema (ten years ago- my current situation), and if so whats a non perscibed solution???? its to the point i refuse to get my nails done and feel self cautios when greeting my clients cause ppl can be ignorant n think i have a contagious diesase!
Danika,
Unfortunately, there is no cure for Eczema. There are, however, many things you can do to help ease the flare-ups and irritation. The biggest thing is to keep the area moisturized. The first thing I would try is an oatmeal bath.
Easy oatmeal bath: 1 cup of quick oats, slow cooking oats or unflavored instant oatmeal into a blender or coffee grinder. Blend until you get a very fine oatmeal powder. Stir this in a nice warm bath and have a good soak.
After that, use a natural, unscented emollient on any areas effected by eczema. Oolong tea can also be good to drink to help ease the itching.
i have eczema. and i have experienced all of these pictures. i was born with it and all my life i have been finding different ways to make it better. here is my list:
1. body soap= Dove sensetive skin
2. lotion= moisture thrapy intensive by Avon(mostly the hand cream)
3. laundery detergent= anything that is free of perfumes, there are way more today than when i was a child
4. weekly oatmeal baths= 1 cup of whole oatmeal into a cut off pantyhose tie it off like a tea bag take a warm bath with it and use it to put extra on any break outs this way avoids the messy clean up after(always pat dry and then put lotion on before getting dressed to lock in moisture)
5. sugar scrubs= when in need, take granulated sugar, body soap and extra virgin olive oil mix them together and use to exfoliate (other oils work just the same)
6. cleaning= rinse bath tub with a vinager and water mix after cleaning it with harsh chemicals to nutrelize it
and just another little note, if you wash your hair first and put it up then wash your body that helps to wash away any residue left on the skin from the shampoo and conditioner
this thread is a big help… thanks for the remedy.. my ezcema is attacking me again.. =(
btw, i use petroleum jelly to keep my affected area moisturized.. is it good?
I just wanted to let people know that I had eczema for a good 5 years of my life before I got under control. It is to my knowledge that people can very well outgrow their eczema like some people out grow allergies. So for some of those out there worried that they may have it forever there is hope. Also to get treat mine I was prescribed an anti-biotic and then given some steroid creams to help treat the sores. I can’t remember what was prescribed sorry guys. What I use now when I do have an occasional flair up is triamcinolone and clobetasol (for the severe eczema) these two have saved my life. Hopefully this information can help some of you guys out.
Danika, I am a hairdresser and suffer from eczema. But after seeing a skin specialist I have found out that it is the scalp oil that makes mine flare up so badly. I had to stop hairdressing because of it. It got so bad that my fingers would bleed and crack. I stopped after 12 years because I couldn’t take it anymore. I cut my families hair and it still flares up but at least it is not as bad as when I was working every day. Kinda sad because I have always wanted to be a hair stylist.
I didn’t have any skin problems until after i gave birth to my daughter (very strange, i thought) so ive had it for 9 yrs now..tried a cream that a dr gave to me..it totally worked for a small patch i had on my leg..so now its totally gone. but then i got it on my ankles and the cream doesnt work for that!! i just had neck surgery in dec and after that, it dissapeared totally..well..now its back (that was veryy strange too) dont understand that at all!! now its back and i also have it on my elbows!! im soooo done dealing with this..need to calm it down asap!! ive read the prior posts and am going to try some of the ideas, hope they work!
I’m 13 and I’ve had it all my life then I found out I had allergies I’m allergic to polin so during fall and spring it flares and I never want to go outside I’ve tried everything even steroid stuff and nothing stops the itching and burning I haye it soooooooooooo much
