The majority of females will experience cellulite, usually sometime after they’re 30. There are a number of myths surrounding this condition and these miss-truths can cause some women to choose treatments that have no chance of succeeding. This article will debunk the most common misconceptions about cellulite.

Myth 1: Cellulite is only fat

Cellulite isn’t directly caused by the fat under the skin. There are fibrous bands link the skin to the fat and due to genetics, age or an inactive lifestyle these bands tighten, pulling the skin down and creating the dimpled appearance that is cellulite.

This is one of the major reasons why liposuction doesn’t work for cellulite. Simply removing the fat does very little about these fibrous bands. There is a range of plastic surgery for cellulite procedures that can directly target these bands.

Myth 2: Only fat women get cellulite

As already mentioned, the main reason why cellulite occurs is because of the fibrous bands that pull on the skin. It is these bands that also make it possible for skinny women to also suffer the condition. While excess fat can certainly increase the occurrence of cellulite because more fat bulges as the bands pull downwards, skinny women who have cellulite will have a hard time reducing its appearance without somehow dealing with the bands.

Myth 3: Exercise doesn’t help cellulite removal

Exercise can improve the appearance of cellulite. However, the exercise needs to focus on building muscle, not just losing weight. This is because muscle helps to stretch and tighten the skin, smoothing out the dimples caused by the fibrous bands. Just doing cardio to lose weight can actually make the cellulite look worse because it can cause you to lose muscle and therefore any definition caused by the muscle. Aim to do a combination of both cardio and weight training in order to get the balance right.
